Lacrimal (Punctal) Occlusion
Lacrimal occlusion involves partial blockage of the tear
drainage ducts to help keep the tears on the eyes. This
painless procedure provides many people with long term
relief from dry eye symptoms.
Dry eye syndrome
occurs
when eyes have persistent dryness, scratching, burning,
frequent redness, or even just feeling like something is in
the eye. This most often occurs as a result of an imbalance
of the quantity or the quality of tears.
Eye drops may temporarily relieve dry eye symptoms. If too
much moisture drains out of the eyes, punctual plugs
inserted into the tear ducts can help keep the eyes
moistened.
The optometrist starts by inserting a temporary
(dissolvable) plug which will last 4 to 7 days. After
placement of the plugs, they usually can not be seen or felt
in the eyes.
If the dryness symptoms are reduced, they will then insert a
silicone (permanent) plug into the eye.
Punctal Plugs can provide long-term relief to those
suffering from dry eye syndrome. Cunningham Vision Care can
evaluate your eyes to determine if lacrimal occlusion is
right for you.
