There is much excitement about the idea of
clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts.
Within the past few years, refractive surgery has become
increasingly popular for those who are contact lens
intolerant or who have lifestyles that demand good vision
without the need for glasses. The most common of refractive
surgery procedures is LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ
Keratomileusis).
LASIK SURGERY PROCEDURE SUMMARY
-
Prior to the procedure, anesthetic
"numbing" drops are placed in the eye.
-
The doctor will insert a speculum into
the eye to keep it wide open.
-
A microkeratome blade is used to cut
and fold back a thin layer of the cornea, creating a
"flap".
-
A laser then removes corneal tissue,
reshaping the inner surface of the cornea.
-
The flap is smoothed back down over the
treated area
-
The flap "seals" back down with no
stitches
-
Most people notice immediate
improvement in vision when they leave surgery.
-
Most patients can return to normal
every day activities the next day.
Despite its many positive qualities, LASIK
is still cosmetic surgery, and many people fear surgery on
their eyes. There is an array of exciting new alternatives
to refractive surgery including daily disposable contact
lenses, 30-day continuous wear contact
lenses, and orthokeratology.
Orthokeratology involves using a gas
permeable contact lens to correct your vision while you
sleep. They gently reshape your eyes so you can see
clearly even after you remove the lenses the next morning.
